Men's Sock Etiquette

In political and business circles, men's attire in formal occasions is often seen as a reflection of their overall image. While many carefully select suits, shoes, and ties, they often overlook the crucial detail of socks. However, experts point out that wearing black shoes with white socks to negotiations can reduce the success rate to approximately 80%; wearing the wrong socks could cost a deal.

Harmonious Color Coordination

In formal occasions, men's attire should follow the "three-color rule," meaning that formal wear should be simple and limited to three colors to showcase solemnity and harmony. Therefore, the colors of trousers, socks, and shoes should coordinate. For example, casual white socks are suitable for casual wear and white shoes, while sporty white socks should be paired with sneakers.

Simply put, remember one principle: the color of your socks should match your dress trousers or dress shoes. For example, when wearing a navy blue suit and dress shoes on Monday, choose navy blue or black socks; when wearing a silver-gray suit and brown dress shoes on Tuesday, choose dark gray or brown socks.

Solid Colors Don't Detract from Dignity
In formal occasions, business socks should be solid colors, avoiding jacquard, prints, or other patterns to ensure a formal and dignified look. However, for everyday wear, you can choose business socks with simple jacquard or embroidery on the cuff, which retains formality while showcasing personal style. For example, vertical stripes can make the ankle appear slimmer, which is ideal for those with thicker calves. But please note that you should avoid overly flashy styles, and never substitute athletic socks for business socks.

Choosing the Right Cuff Height is Crucial
In business settings, the choice of sock cuff height is critical. An inappropriate cuff height can not only affect the overall look of your outfit but may also cause embarrassment. For example, if a man is sitting and a section of white cotton sock peeks out from between his trousers and dress shoes, this disharmony stems from the inappropriate pairing of formal attire and casual socks. To avoid this, we should choose socks with an appropriate knee-high heel to ensure that the socks do not expose the calf when sitting and crossing one's legs, thus maintaining a presentable business image.

In business settings, to maintain a proper image, we generally recommend choosing mid-calf socks with a knee-high heel of at least 15-16cm. This length can, to some extent, prevent the unsightly appearance caused by the calf being exposed when sitting or crossing one's legs.
